Feminist Fairytales and Folklore

Feminist Fairytales and Folklore

I live in the land where fairytales and madness grow in abundance, and that’s no accident… Here on the Oregon coast, I meet wild, wise women, encounter natural miracles every day, and cross paths with more than just the occasional mad hatter.

Most days, my heart likes to lead the way… which means I experience inspiration, joy, and heartache in abundance. Share in it with me as I redefine princess, magic, and fairytale creatures in a society where mental and physical illness abound. I don’t know about you, but I prefer the deep end of life. Don’t worry though, I promise to always leave hope and sweetness in my novels.

Crystal Belle is the beginning of my Retold Fairytales series… we address divorce, touch lightly on LGBTQ+ issues (in a refreshingly soft and romantic way), the importance of sisterhood, and a woman being the hero in her own story — more than once.

The Retold Fairytales Series

Fairytale writer with a story of her own…

This author is a woman who has been growing intentionally in the direction of loving kindness since her tumultuous childhood led her to question what makes a person choose between acts of healing or harm. No stranger to the cruel reality of the world, Jessica Bird made her way through a young marriage and divorce, survived and healed the aftermath rape and several miscarriages, and she lives each day with a chronic illness…

Known for her courageous honesty, incessant giggling, gentle kindness, and inspiring resilience, Jessica writes under the pen name Vera Lee Bird. She strives to bring courage, and hope to readers with her spin on the magical tales we all grew up with. She writes from the safe haven of a small town on the cool Oregon coast, where she has found room to breathe and, at last, a place to call home.
